Traveling as much as we can, Tania and I find ourselves in locations or situations that are begging to be captured. I always find myself having to take my camera with, because hey you never know what you going to see. It's important to never forget that the opportunity to capture something really beautiful or even unbelievable always exists. So be prepared! So as a filmmaker / photographer I have a number of tips I try to abide by when traveling to ensure I can always try to get that awesome, beautiful or unique shot. If you wish to get into the world of photography or cinematography I would recommend these 5 tips to help you on your way. 1- Take your camera with you. You never know what you going to see, what interesting or out of the ordinary discovery you will make. Having your camera handy allows the opportunity to capture these moments, and or create a moment. A saying I try to live by - "I would rather have my camera and not need it, than need my camera and not have it." 2- Have a friend or partner go with you. Whenever possible invite your friend or partner with you on your trip. Why? Well, sometimes a beautiful scenic shot would be that much better with a model (by model I mean anyone) in it. We cannot all afford to hire a stunning catwalk model to accompany us on all our shoots. Well no one I know at least, so any friend or partner who wants to travel with you is the perfect candidate for this "job". Someone to give the viewer an idea this is being experienced by someone. This also gives you options, you could have a shot of the view, and another shot of the view with someone doing something in the shot. Maybe just appreciating the view, running away from camera towards the view. You name it the possibilities are endless, with a model in the shot depending on what you do, you can create any mood. To either compliment the shot, add to it or create a juxtaposition. From sadness or joy, simply by having your model perform some appropriate action. The below images are examples of times where I wouldn't have been able to capture these moments without a "model" friend or partner. The opportunity for a great sunset shot was there, but with a model the possibilities for numerous types of shots became apparent. 3 - Have 2 camera options available. Having both of these types of camera on hand will make your life a great deal easier. A GoPro (or equivalent) and or your trusty DSLR. You never know what situation you may find yourself in, and in many cases having to whip out a bulkier DSLR, fit your lense, set up your shot, place it on a tripod. Doesn't leave you with much time to capture something quickly. This is where your action camera (GoPro) comes in very handy, as it is quick to mount and ready to shoot at the press of a button. In many situations you may also find you do not have the necessary equipment or crew needed to hang your camera off the side of a mountain in order to capture a shot. But with an action camera, being as compact and light as it is it lends itself to be dangled off a cliff or next to your model while scuba diving alongside a whale shark etc. Another Idea: With one camera you can set up a time lapse (GoPro), leave it to do what it does and go about capturing other shots with your DSLR. This will save you alot of time, especially if you may not find yourself with the opportunity to return to a spot. For those moments where you do have the time, then it is advantageous for you to use the DSLR. Where you can set up a shot, pick the perfect lense, check your settings, place your camera on a tripod for a stable shot etc etc. Here you can then get the perfectly composed shot. A camera for every moment makes your life a great deal easier, so be prepared and have either camera readily available.. 4 - Take your time. If you have the time, take it. Be patient, walk around and allow inspiration the opportunity to find you. When you find yourself in a spot that lends itself to beautiful shots and you have the time to wait, then don't rush it. Many times you just want to get a shot of the view and then leave, but do not forget you are there to enjoy the moment too. So don't rush it, enjoy the splendor of the spot, enjoy the time with your friend or partner. In doing so you would be surprised how ideas magically pop into your head, or are offered by your "model". Yes, get that shot of the location or view, but then again as mentioned above be creative and come up with various shots and actions for your model to perform to alter the meaning or mood of the clip or picture. And the only thing that will allow you to do this is time. Unless of course you have been there before, and know what to expect, then pre-planning your shots would save alot of time. The below images are examples of the time we found ourselves on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere. So we took our time and came up with some ideas for various shots (picture and video). 5 - Be willing to explore, get off the beaten track. Meet new people, try new things, take the path less traveled. In doing so, you may find that perfect spot, that magical moment where the rays of the setting sun filter in through the jungle, falling on the ruins you discovered. With no tourists around, because only the locals know about this particular spot. Now I wouldn't call myself a professional photographer / DOP by any means. If anything I am a producer and director, but my love and passion for pictures and moving image is what keeps me capturing more. I am certainly getting better everyday, and I think by following the above tips I may find myself capturing progressively better shots. I have to admit though, in writing these points I realise how much I need to follow my own advice, as I find myself not following my own steps on many occasions. Although I always have a model with me in the form of my beautiful girlfriend, who accompanies me wherever we travel. So at least step 2 I cannot forget - Thanks babes. Another 5 tips, I know I have learned will certainly be added to the 5 above hopefully soon in a follow up blog post. I hope these tips were helpful, and happy shooting. While traveling in Cambodia we found beautiful jungle trees creeping their way through and over ancient ruins. Everywhere we looked there were the most amazing temple ruins being overrun by the jungle. Collapsed massive stones originally part of these majestic structures, hidden in the middle of the Cambodian Jungle. We managed to explore only a tiny part of the massive site. Below you will find a few clips of our model - Tania walking through these various posts soaking in the majesty of the ruins and the overpowering jungle. Exploring the Ruins at Sunset This is one of the clips I have on Pond5 for sale, but if you like and you ask me nicely I may be inclined to set up a link for you to download this one as well - no charge. Send me a message and I'll see what I can do. If you are like me and you love to create videos or movies, but you don't always find it that easy. I would challenge a guess that the main problems are the type of footage you need in order to make your film, as well as the cost needed to create a shot. While shooting stuff yourself is always an option, there isn't always the time, or even the particular location or type of shot you need for the vision you have for your movie. Most of the time there also isn't the money available to put together a production crew to shoot a particular shot. So what are the options? Well there are numerous sites where one can purchase footage, with various options when it comes to subject matter. The quality of the footage is also almost always top notch and would certainly improve the production value of your film no doubt. But the second problem then still exists, the cost to purchase the content. While the cost to purchase many of these clips isn't exorbitant, not everyone has a budget to purchase a few good quality clips. So are there any Free stock footage sites out there, and I am glad to announce Yup! But the more appropriate question would be are there any GOOD Free stock footage sites out there? Again I am glad to say - Hell Yeah! So below I have listed a number of websites I have come across that I would be happy to list and rate from 1 - 4 (Best to Not Bad). Before I begin I would like to remind the reader that I have also created a section to my site where I offer some of my video and images created for Free. check out this link to see more - http://www.tanurix.com/free-film--picture-stock.html I also continue to update these pages with new content whenever I can. I hope you enjoy and can use. 1. Videvo.net Through my searches I have come across videvo, and quite happily rate them at number one on my list. The reason is quite clear when you visit the site. It is great looking, easy to use website with phenomenal quality content especially when you consider all the footage is free to download and use in your projects. Not only do they offer video clips but they have motion graphics as options to use for free as well. Not only can you download content but should you have footage of your own you can become a contributor as well. Offer some of your content to be used by the users of the site. The site administrators are also very good in their support should you have any technical issues, as well as simply keeping a member up to date on new additions to their library. It creates a sort of community of like minded individuals helping one another out, and should you need a specific clip give them an ask I am sure they would happily respond and see what they can do. Now don't be surprised they do have links and ads for shutterstock, which I find on many of the other sites listed here as well. This also includes the top 3 - 6 clip options when searching clips, which are shutterstock clips that link you to the shutterstock website. These clip thumbnails always look good, and it does lead you to a site where you have to pay. But hey, videvo needs to make some money somehow, and you are not obligated to click on those links anyhow. 2. Motion Elements Similar to Videvo, Motion Elements offer free stock footage on their site. Although they are not predominantly a Free stock footage website. Meaning that their main and sole purpose is to sell stock footage. But they have been added to this list because of the free content they do offer, and you do need to register but you do not have to provide any credit card information. Unless of course you choose to purchase one of the required to pay for clips. There is a limit to the number of free clips you can download per day, and with the number of free clips limited to possibly around 400, the number of free clips is not too large. I also noted that a large majority if the free stock consists of motion graphics, with only a few actual free footage clips on offer. On occasion you may find a stipulation to some free clips, namely you may only download the lowest resolution clip for free where all higher resolutions require a payment. But overall there are some free clips worth downloading, or that you may find you can use. The free motion graphics options are numerous, and there is always a use for motion graphics so check it. 3. Videezy When I first visited videezy I got a very Videvo kind of vibe and feel about this site. From the registration to the video upload it all feels very similar. Videvo on the other hand just feels smoother in design, better functionality wise, a greater quantity of clips and the quality of the content offered on videvo seems just a little better - but not by much. which is why it is rated below videvo on my list. But the main criteria of this list being quality clips and FREE is covered, and done so quite well. One annoying aspect of the site is the video playback of all downloadable content. I always seem to have difficulty trying to play a video, which is obviously important as I would like to view the content before choosing to download it. Which is where I did find an interesting phenomenon with almost all the videos I tried to look at, there download numbers were far greater than the view numbers for most videos. In one case a video had 0 views, but 153 downloads - to see what I mean - http://www.videezy.com/arts-and-culture/1180-make-up-tool I have also had difficulty just trying to download clips before, and the lack of info on what license is applicable for a particular video is quite annoying should one want to actually follow the license requirements. Even though it is very similar to videvo in most cases, the problems mentioned above are why I placed it at 3 on my list. But I still consider it a good site for Free stock footage as the options are quite numerous and fall within quite a number of different categories. Beach front B-Roll, is just your average cinematographer offering some of his random, and some specific footage for free. The quality of his footage is quite good, and his various unique footage options could be just the look you need for your specific media project. No catches here it's all free, just watch a youtube link of the clip and if you like it - click download. The quantity of content available is limited, but the quality of his offering is what places Beach Front B-Roll at number 4 on my list. A solo operator such as myself, with some good quality content. A donation button is present throughout, so if you find you can, help out ensuring BB Roll can continue to offer high quality content for free. Cute stock footage is I guess just that. It's cute, offers a few clips for free but appears to focus largely on motion graphics. This is a site where the majority of items must be paid for, but by simply clicking on the FREE link below the advertising block on the home page will take you to their free video options. These options can be counted on a single page, so not too many on offer here, so was not worth my while registering with the site. The name says it all, and put even better is the sentence below the logo on the site itself which best describes this site and it's offering, I quote - "This is just some fun shit I have shot on some cool toys. Nothing fancy here just free" Not much to offer, but hey it's free and there may even be some clips you need. Who knows check it out. Vidsplay Another simple site offering a few free video clips, various clips that fall in various categories. With a simple layout structure it's not too easy to find specific content. Regardless though some of the content is quite good and with the videos falling within various categories surely something you are looking for could be found here. Check it out just to be sure. Although there are countless websites offering free content in some form, some of which I may have missed in my searching. The above 4 would constitute my 4 listed top free stock footage sites with the emphasis being on FREE and quality. With a few extra other random sites added for good measure.
In my most recent blog, I finally got to the topic of multiverses, or alternate realities and I touched on the fact that there are countless in the scientific community who are supporters of the idea of the existence of multi-verses. To see how I got to this point be sure to read my first and 2nd blog on this topic - Exploration & Exploration Continued. As there is quite a bit of discussion to read before understanding how I got to this point. Ok, so there are some good theories behind the idea of multiverses, let me try to give a breakdown on some of the theories that point to such a conclusion. · Bubble universes (based on the standard model), This theory suggests that space-time may stretch out to infinity. If so, then everything in our universe must at some point repeat upon itself, and in essence create more alternate universes. · Membranes (based on string theory), This theory states the possibility that there are more than the 4 dimensions we believe we currently can perceive. Those are the three of space and one of time. This theory simply put proposes that our universe may float alongside numerous other dimensions that we simply cannot perceive. · Many-worlds hypothesis (based on a speculative form of quantum mechanics) This theory touches on the potential choice or outcome that could happen (which you do not choose) does in fact happen. So simply put, in any given situation you have two possible choices to make, whichever you may end up choosing, the other choice that you never chose still happens but is created on a new level of reality, separate but alongside to our own. This is based on the Copenhagen Interpretation - originating from the famous double slit quantum experiment Below is a short video, that probably does a better job of explaining the above 3 theories. Now if individuals a great deal smarter than I am, mostly come to this same conclusion, and there is much support from the trusted scientific community and evidence in quantum experiments to suggest it as a possibility. Then I'm going to explore the idea that there are such realities or dimensions, but how could one know for sure? We simply do not seem to have the physical ability or technological tools available to perceive or decode these signals into perceivable stimuli. Well, there may be a way, and that way could be Lucid Dreaming or OBE's. For millennia people have been talking about Astral Projection, OBE – Out of Body Experiences or Lucid Dreaming (Dream Yoga). These have been abilities individuals have taught, practiced and kept secret in some cases for a very long time. Where are these individuals going to? Projecting to? What are they experiencing, perceiving? What is OBE or astral projection? Could it be these multiverses, alternate dimensions are being explored? Is it possible that these multi-verses spoken about in current scientific theory are being and have been traveled to for millennia? Only now is it becoming a more mainstream avenue of discussion or scientific inquiry? Well, these and many more questions are what I would now like to explore, both in scientific theory and understanding as well as experiential practice (knowing). And this is important, because as mentioned in my 1st blog on this subject - What is wisdom? Wisdom is knowledge obtained through experience. One can understand something, but one can only truly know something when they have experienced it. So read this article, understand the points made in it. But only truly know what is being discussed when you choose to experience it, in practice. What is Astral Projection? A process by which an individuals human consciousness temporarily leaves the physical body and functions independently, while the physical body remains unmoving (asleep) throughout. Through this, one experiences the world from a perspective other than what one would within a physical body using the physical senses - because in essence one isn't physical anymore. Within an astral projection you retain a high level of consciousness, and can remember the experience in detail upon ones conscious return back to the body. This is similar to what some people experience in their dreams, where they become conscious (lucid / awake) within their dreams. Otherwise known as lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming as touched on above is the conscious waking within a dream experience, the ability to awaken within a dream as opposed to sleepwalk within the dream which the majority of people do today. Ask all your friends about this, you may be surprised to find that there are a few who do or have experienced a lucid dream. There does though seem to be a distinction between Lucid Dreaming and OBE's - It is stated that a lucid dream is the result of "awaking" within a subconscious projection otherwise known as a dream. Whereas an OBE is the actual shifting of the consciousness to another plane, or level of reality. And for this purpose, having started this blog on multiverses, I will focus more so on OBE's. Astral Projection, otherwise known as Out of Body Exploration or OBE for short or even lucid dreaming are phenomena or abilities that has been achieved and practiced for millennia. Egyptians called it the light body, the Tibetans called it the double body, Tibetans also practiced and still do today a form of Yoga called Dream Yoga. A study conducted by Dr Crookall at the University of Aberdeen showed that out of 488 world societies, 89% had at least some tradition regarding OBEs. Interestingly, scientist such as the likes of Stephen La Berge have studied and to an extent proven the validity of lucid dreaming. So what does mainstream science think about OBE's? Well mainstream science considers the OBE to be a type of hallucination that can be caused by various neurological and psychological factors. What is a hallucination? A hallucination is a perception in the absence of external stimulus that has qualities of real perception. Hallucinations are vivid, substantial, and located in external objective space. This does sound like the descriptions of what an OBE would be, a hallucination would then also be something made up or created within the mind or subconscious of the individual hallucinating. Now if this were true for OBE's as well, how does one explain the following - · Near Death Experiences (NED's - also considered to be OBE's), where people near death, after an accident, or during surgery in hospital, experienced being outside of their body when having a near death experience. Such as in a hospital theater room, and perceiving events taking place in an adjoining room within the hospital. Then having the events experienced by the individual verified by witnesses present during the afore mentioned event. - For more on NDE's · The ability some have achieved of accurately perceiving items at certain locations around the globe, when out of body. Then confirming these with others when back in the physical. · There also exists an example of an OBE study conducted by Dr. Charles Tart, who was a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of California. Dr Charles Tart documented the OBE experience of a young woman who was one of his research subjects. He conducted an experiment where the subject was placed in a room, with nothing but a clock, a bed, a shelf and an observation window. The subject was challenged, while strapped to numerous electrical devices, to go out of body and look at a piece of paper placed on the shelf above her bed. The shelf and piece of paper was at a significant distance that she could not see it even if she was standing up. The paper had a number written on it (the number was 25132) and she was asked to go out of body, look at the number, remember it and when she returned to her body to repeat the number she reportedly saw. The research subject was able to do so with 100% accuracy, while she was being watched with the number still well above her on the shelf.- For more on this experiment. Another example is the one that occurred to Graham Nicholls (author, artist and expert on OBE's) - “At the time I was involved in regular meetings of a small group at which we would exchange ideas and discuss different practices etc. On this night I taught my G-Technique for the first time, which is an advanced form of breathing and bodywork. After practicing this for a while I wasn’t feeling much, but then just as I thought it wasn’t working I felt overwhelmed. Moments later I was moving through some kind of natural landscape in an out-of-body state. Then the scene seemed to break and I found myself standing on the corner of Moor Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, London. Everything was tinted with a cerulean or bluish-gray effect, I recognised where I was immediately as I used to work in the area. Moments later an explosion burst out from the right-hand side of the road, around 100 metres away. I remember looking to my right and seeing a man run towards the explosion; I also remember seeing the Pollo Bar (an Italian restaurant that has since closed), which again confirmed where I was. At one point an intense wave of emotion hit me, as if coming from the people who had lost their lives in the explosion. The whole OBE was very oppressive, and as it came to an end it took quite a while to come out of the trance state I was in.” Even though many might be skeptical of this precognitive OBE, it did not take place when Graham was alone and reported after the fact — as hardline skeptics might assume. There were in fact several witnesses on the evening of the vision. One of whom, a Portuguese man named Cristovão Neto, says, “I remember thinking it was quite far-fetched, but yes, the “vision” involved an explosion in Soho”, that was on April 25th, five days before the actual bombing took place in London Soho. Lawrence Brightman, from Florida who has lived in London for many years, was another witness present on the night of the OBE. He remembers Graham stating that what he’d seen was “a bombing at a bar in Soho, and he said it was a precognition before the actual bombing happened”. These statements are intriguing and clearly support Graham’s version of events. - See more at: http://disinfo.com/2013/07/out-of-body-experiences-real-or-imagined/#sthash.bILPMNXc.dpuf If these examples, which are described as OBE's, are in fact hallucinations, then how is it possible that there are other individuals present to verify the facts and experiences described by the Out of Body explorer? I would like to point to a further query to consider, I can guess that in probably most of the cases the scientist who have determined these hallucination ideas about OBE's, are individuals who have never experienced extensive Out of Body Experiences. They are formulating an idea, a theory about an experience they have never had. Since this is a -reproduce-able experience that people can train themselves to have, I would be more interested in the ideas or theories of those scientists who have had extensive OBE's. As Tom Campbell (such an individual) says, "the proof is in the pudding. Sometimes you just need to give it a try and find out for yourself what is real and what is not. The human mind is an amazing tool, and the consciousness that inhabits it even more so." So what do you think? Are OBE's real? Are they opportunities to explore reality, alternate realities, yourself? Or are they just hallucinations? Perhaps the purpose of OBE's are an opportunity to provide you with some methods, tools or practices that you can use to find out what, and who you are, and not to take someone elses ideas or theories on the matter but to figure it out for yourself. The only way to truly know, is to self realise, to experience in practice. If you have questions, and are serious in answering them, then let the experience itself provide the evidence. In my next blog I would like to touch on the following question, · Those who claim to go out of body, what exactly are they doing? How are they achieving this? I would also look into the ideas of those scientist who are individuals who have experienced extensive OBE's. Get a scientists point of view on the matter. Then also detail how it's achieved, and give you the reader an opportunity to know for yourself. |
